What Does NOT Constitute Dowry

Voluntary Gifts: Gifts given out of love and affection without any demand or expectation from the receiving party.

Wedding Presents: Traditional gifts exchanged during marriage ceremonies as part of cultural customs, given willingly.

Stridhan: Property given to a woman out of love and affection, which becomes her personal property.

Mutual Exchange: Gifts exchanged mutually between families without any coercion or demand.

Key Distinction

The crucial difference lies in the element of demand or expectation. If gifts are given voluntarily without any pressure, demand, or expectation from the receiving party, they do not constitute dowry under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
